This isn’t so obvious but there are two parts to successfully import images into magento:

1) First make sure you copy your images to the magento images/import directory.

2) In your spreadsheet you must put a ‘/’ before the image names, for example the thumbnail, small_image, image column values should have something like this for values:

/thimage.jpg  /smimage.jpg  /bigimage.jpg
